Kachinas

Kachinas have a rich and varied history beyond the fact that they are just carved wooden dolls for sale at Indian stores.

The old legends that were handed down to the Indian people tell the tale of supernatural spirits and beings. Mostly they were benevolent entities and were placed here by the Creator to teach the Indian people basic living skills; how to live in harmony with nature to bring rain and fertility to the ground; how to make tools and artifacts; how to heal sickness; and the art of offering spiritual gratitude.

These powers are imbued upon a people not only through the carved dolls, but also recreated through traditional dancing.

Each Kachina plays a special role in teaching children and recreating the old ways of learning and honoring ancestors.

Perhaps one of the finest Native carvers of Kachinas is Milton Howard. He was born on the Navajo-Hopi reservation. He takes great pride in his work and uses only the finest cottonwood roots.
